Those who attempt to obey God’s commandments without the saving grace of Christ find themselves unable to accomplish the good intentions of their heart. They are not their own masters; evil and sin rule within them. They are slaves to them and are brought into captivity to the law of sin. Only in Christ will God with every temptation make a way to escape. Paul shows that life without the grace of Christ is defeat, misery, and bondage to sin. Paul says in Chapter 8 that spiritual life, freedom from condemnation, victory over sin, and fellowship with God come through union with Christ by the indwelling Holy Spirit.
